JOB DESCRIPTION
PRIMARY FUNCTION
Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services or designee, the Adapted Physical Education Teacher provides specialized assessment, instruction, methodology, materials and equipment for students with a wide range of physical disabilities, including but not limited to, individual and small group direct instruction, and consultation with special and regular education staff and parents. Key responsibilities also include providing gross motor instruction to students who present with various disabilities, each requiring specialized planning, instruction and consultation with the special education and regular education staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Specific responsibilities will include but will not be limited to the following:
Complete thorough initial evaluations, additional assessments and triennial re-evaluations within district, state and federal guidelines and develop legally compliant assessment reports and IEP’s.
Utilize comprehensive assessment results in developing appropriate IEP goals and objectives to accommodate the wide variety of individual needs of each student.
Participate as a member of the IEP team to develop IEP goals, objectives, adaptations, accommodations, modifications and instructional plans; implement and monitor the IEP.
Make recommendations for student participation in APE; recommend goals, objectives and methods of measurement; recommend frequency of services based upon student need and knowledge of student’s disability(s).
Teach adapted physical education skills to students enrolled in the various special education programs of the district.
Instruct students in classes and instructional periods according to a daily schedule, which includes time and location of services
Provide individualized and small group instruction based on needs of students.
Provide for safe supervision of students while moving or being moved to or from APE; ensure safe supervision and use of adapted equipment based upon student ability and need.
Consult with teachers and parents regarding typical gross motor development and appropriate classroom accommodations and/or modifications.
Maintain accurate documentation as required by law and district policy.
Maintain records of student progress and measure progress toward achieving goals and objectives as stated on the IEP.
Design and implement effective positive behavior management strategies to ensure appropriate behavior of students relative to participation of gross motor activities.
Attend IEP meetings, APE meetings, professional development trainings as well as other meetings as requested
Consult with special education and general education teachers regarding gross motor accommodations and/or modifications as well as specially designed activities.
Provide in-service training for staff as requested.
Perform observations and assessments at off-site locations (or at locations other than traditional school setting).
Perform other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE OF
Federal and State laws and regulations surrounding the provision of special education services, and district policies and procedures; basic and complex motor skills, physical motor fitness, games and appropriate modifications; multiple assessment tools related to the gross motor needs of students; education trends and research findings pertaining to motor deficits; physical disabilities, appropriate instructional goals and strategies; the appropriate use of technology in the instructional process; specialized equipment used by students with a wide range of physical disabilities; how students’ medical conditions impact their ability to participate and how to utilize medical information in instructional planning; basic computer and instructional technology skills.
ABILITY TO
Plan, organize and deliver instruction in a positive and effective learning environment, which addresses the needs of all students identified for APE services; monitor progress of students; adjust instructional strategies according to student’s needs and accurately reports student progress; establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders; ability to work as a team member with other professionals to produce a coordinated approach to the student’s educational program; understand and carry out oral and written directions with minimal accountability controls; revise and adhere to an adapted physical education schedule to meet student needs at assigned schools; follow applicable state and federal timelines; engage in professional development provided by the district as well as through individual efforts; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions requires the following physical demands: hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard; have a means of transportation to conduct work; seeing to conduct inspections of data; and occasional lifting of boxes and equipment and bending or reaching for files and equipment. Weight of materials will vary, but generally less than fifty (50) pounds. Generally, the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking and 40% standing. May be required to correctly transfer or restrain a child physically if needed. Will work with students who have significant academic and social/emotional needs. The job may be performed outdoors under fluctuating temperature variations.
LICENSES/ CREDENTIALS/ EXPERIENCE
Adapted Physical Education Specialist Credential or Added Authorization in Adapted Physical Education or currently enrolled in an Adapted Physical Education credentialing program with the ability to obtain an intern credential prior to employment.
Must pass pre-employment physical examination and fingerprint clearance following an offer of employment.
