JOB DESCRIPTION
PRIMARY FUNCTION
Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services or designee, the Behavior Specialist assists in developing, implementing and training staff and parents in the use of positive behavior support and intervention techniques for special education students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide behavior support services to students whose needs have been identified in an IEP, and others as requested by special education administrator.
Provide consultation, instructional and behavioral support to address the needs of special education students.
Model a variety of behavior management strategies and techniques, including behavior modification, reinforcement and other positive behavior shaping techniques.
Knowledge of criteria for special education qualifications based on state and federal laws and instructional implications.
Write detailed and individualized observational reports and IEP’s.
Coordinate, analyze and maintain appropriate data to monitor the progress of behavior interventions.
Assist in developing interventions, functional behavior assessments and behavior intervention plans in order to provide a safe and effective educational environment.
Provide behavioral support services to students as per student’s IEPs
Use evaluation information, observation, and behavioral data to develop appropriate goals and objectives.
Participate as a member of the IEP team; using data based decisions, to develop IEP goals, objectives, adaptations, accommodations, modifications and instructional plans.
Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with all school district personnel, outside services providers and parents.
Work collaboratively with classroom teachers who have special education students in general education classes, interpreting the abilities and disabilities of these students, and assisting the student curriculum needs; assist other professional staff members in resolving the unique psychological or disciplinary concerns of such students.
Undertake continuing professional development related to special education and instructional methods related to the field.
Confers with staff regarding completing appropriate assessments, documentation and activities related to behavior intervention plans.
Maintain records for all behavior emergency reports.
Provide in-service training to staff, parents and outside agencies.
Perform observations and assessments at off-site locations (or at locations other than traditional school setting).
Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF
Federal and State laws and regulations surrounding the provision of special education services and district policies and procedures; behavior intervention skills; social, emotional and behavioral characteristics of pre-school and school age students; Applied Behavior Analysis; effective teaching techniques; consultation skills; school wide and classroom behavioral management systems and positive replacement behavior; basic computer and instructional technology skills.
ABILITY TO
Organize, plan and deliver professional development activities and training; collaborate and communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders; mentor, peer coach and conduct professional development; design data tracking sheets for students; ability to maintain, analyze and synthesize data; knowledge of applied behavioral analysis and behavioral management techniques; follow applicable state and federal timelines; understand and carry out oral and written directions with minimal accountability controls.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions requires the following physical demands: hearing and peaking to exchange information and make presentations; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard; driving a vehicle to conduct work; seeing to conduct inspections of data; and occasional lifting of boxes and equipment and bending or reaching for files and equipment. Weight of materials will vary, but generally less than thirty pounds. Generally the job requires 35% sitting, 30% walking and 35% standing. May be required to correctly transfer or restrain a child physically if needed. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment and in a clean atmosphere.
LICENSES/ CREDENTIALS/ EXPERIENCE
Possession of any of the following credentials:
Pupil Personnel Services—School Psychology, Education Specialist Instruction Credential—Mild/Moderate Disabilities, Specialist Credential in Special Education—Learning Handicapped, Education Specialist Instruction Credential—Moderate Severe Disabilities, Specialist Credential in Special Education—Severely Handicapped, Speech-Language Pathology Services Credential-Language, Speech & Hearing, or Clinical or Rehabilitative Services, Education Specialist Instruction Credential--Early Childhood Special Education, Adapted Physical Education Specialist Credential or Added Authorization in Adapted Physical Education
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in special education; BCBA preferred.
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
