DEFINTION

Under general supervision of the Maintenance & Operations Director, trains, supervises, and inspects the work of site-based custodians, crew custodians, kitchen custodians, and custodial crewleaders; provides technical advice to Principals regarding daily oversight of site-based custodial services; supervises custodial supply processes and deliveries to assure that adequate quantities of supplies and equipment are available; and performs other related duties as assigned.

TYPICAL DUTIES

Plans, organizes, coordinates and supervises an effective custodial program to meet the cleaning needs of the District; develops in consultation with the Maintenance & Operations Director and other administrators, District-wide policies, procedures, standards and priorities; reviews and evaluates services and makes program adjustments.

Regularly inspects work at all sites to insure proper care and cleaning and compliance with laws, rules and regulations; works with site administrators, maintenance staff and site custodians to prioritize and coordinate duties and assignments of the custodial staff; determines and adjusts time allocations per site and develops appropriate schedules for crews in each geographic area; arranges for and schedules substitute custodial staff.

Resolves concerns received from Principals, other administrators, maintenance or other staff and the public.

Makes arrangements for specially scheduled events as necessary; develops and supervises schedules for deep cleaning and special projects.

Develops and implements training programs and instructs custodians and crewleaders in proper cleaning techniques and use of equipment.

Supervises and evaluates the performance of assigned custodians and crewleaders. Collaborates with site administrators on the training and evaluation of site custodians. As necessary, provides technical leadership, expertise and input to site administrators in regards to daily site-based custodial services.

Prepares and submits recommendations related to custodial staffing levels and equipment and supply purchases; oversees the custodial supply warehouse operation; insures supplies are purchased from consortium and other vendors in compliance with state purchasing regulations; maintains effective stock levels and accountability measures.

Assists the Director in employee selection for custodial staff and recommends disciplinary action as appropriate.

Accommodates community groups in the District’s Use of School Facilities program; prepares rooms, furniture and equipment for special events; assigns personnel to special events, assemblies, sporting events, school or outside organization events and other extra-curricular activities; reviews and approves resources for site usage requests.

Assists the Director in the development and allocation of the custodial operations budget including assigned responsibilities for personnel, services, materials and equipment; monitors the budget and makes adjustments as needed.

Prepares a variety of reports, records and files.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Custodian II generally is assigned to, and responsible for, a specific site during the day under the supervision of a Principal or other site administrator; in addition to cleaning duties, the incumbent performs a variety of related duties supportive of school activities. Supervision is typically less immediate in this classification and there are more non-routine duties. The Custodian III- (Site Based) performs all the duties of a Custodian II, but is assigned to a specific middle school site and, in addition, provides basic lead direction by assigning and reviewing the work of Custodians I assigned to that site not served by a traveling crew. The Custodial Crewleader is responsible for the cleanliness of schools/offices in an assigned geographic area. This is a lead class assigned to train and provide work direction to a team of custodians traveling from site to site, and to personally perform custodial work on an as needed basis. The Custodial Supervisor is a single-position class that supervises the District custodial program provided by traveling crews cleaning school buildings, offices, and related areas; evaluates the custodial program; establishes standards and specifications, and inspects sites; provides technical advice to Principals regarding daily oversight of site-based custodial services.

EMPLOYEE STANDARDS

Knowledge of: Knowledge of modern cleaning methods, techniques, materials, equipment, and work procedures used in all phases of a custodial program; planning and organizing techniques; work simplification and efficiency standards; safety regulations and procedures; basic building maintenance and repair practices and procedures; principles of supervising, training, and evaluating employees; basic budgetary policies and procedures; inventory methods and practices; and record keeping techniques.

Ability to: Supervise the District’s custodial program effectively and efficiently; establish priorities and make sound operational decisions; inspect work at all sites to insure proper care and cleaning and compliance with laws, rules and regulations; train, schedule, assign work, supervise, motivate, and evaluate the work of subordinates; plan, organize and coordinate work and develop written standards, specifications, and training materials; estimate and order required custodial supplies and equipment; read and interpret safety and other laws, rules regulations; establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with co-workers, site and District staff, students and others; communicate effectively orally and in writing; explain and justify operational needs and work procedures persuasively and without alienating others; assist with the development of the annual budget; monitor the budget and project and estimate program budgetary needs; write reports and maintain records; and operate a personal computer and related software.

Essential Physical Activities and Work Environment: Sufficient stamina to stand, walk, climb, kneel, crawl, reach, twist, crouch, squat, balance and bend in the performance of daily work activities; strength to transport boxes and equipment and other objects weighing up to 50 pounds; mobility to climb and descend ladders; sufficient finger dexterity to operate cleaning equipment and grasp, push, and pull heavy equipment and objects (e.g. desks, chairs, tables, file/storage cabinets, etc.) weighing over 150 lbs; sufficient stamina to perform moderate to heavy manual labor on a weekly basis; mobility sufficient to drive a vehicle daily to various locations throughout the District; sufficient dexterity to work in confined areas; sufficient hearing to comprehend ordinary conversation and hear warnings; sufficient clarity of speech to give directions, training, and warnings, and to exchange information about site conditions with others; and sufficient visual acuity to drive a vehicle, spot safety hazards, monitor cleanliness of completed work areas and read fine print. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing.

Work environment includes both office settings and cleaning sites. Work is subject to exposure to dust, dirt, odors, noise, vibrations, heights, poor ventilation, solvents, chemicals and fumes. Work is conducted occasionally in adverse weather conditions, and is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Typical Background: Four years of progressively responsible custodial or related maintenance work experience including two years of supervisory or lead responsibilities, planning and scheduling work, developing work standards or material specifications, and preparing training materials. Graduation from high school or recognized equivalent preferably supplemented by specialized training in the custodial trades, housekeeping, business management and supervision. School district experience is strongly preferred.

License and/or Certificates: Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license and the ability to drive a stick shift vehicle is required. Must meet District vehicle and liability insurance requirements, as appropriate. May be required to obtain job-related certificates after appointment.
