DEFINITION

Under general supervision as a HVAC Technician, or more immediate supervisor for a trainee, performs the full range of skilled journey-level heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration work; assists or coordinates with other skilled trades or serves as skilled worker on larger projects; and performs other duties as assigned.

TYPICAL DUTIES

Installs, inspects, calibrates, diagnoses, troubleshoots, services, operates, and repairs a variety of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, kitchen equipment, such as pumps, valves, condensing units, evaporators, copper tubing, wiring, cooling towers, compressors, motors, chillers, and boilers.

Installs, inspects, calibrates, diagnoses, troubleshoots, services, operates, and repairs a variety, electrical, electronic, building automation and direct digital control systems, including sequencers, controllers, economizers, sensors, thermostats, actuators, dampers, transducers, pumps, starters, thermometers, switches, valves, interlocks, and other parts and systems. Tests and balances air conditioning ducts; drains, flushes and checks chemicals on boilers.

Works from sketches, plans, drawings, blueprints, specifications and electrical schematics. Plans and estimates material and labor costs; locates and acquires parts and materials for repair or maintenance of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems; maintains service, repair and other records as required.

Operates a variety of testing equipment, brazing torches, drills and other power and hand tools; operates a District vehicle to conduct work; operates computers and assigned software to centrally control various HVAC systems throughout the District.

Maintains shop including cleaning and organizing tools and shop equipment. Confers with contract vendors, engineers and others to discuss plans and resolve issues; contacts school and site personnel regarding maintenance or repair needs; occasionally provides advice to semi-skilled and unskilled maintenance workers; performs other duties as assigned.

Senior designation configures and maintains the District’s EMS (Energy Management System) and acts as an information source for further troubleshooting on more complex HVAC issues.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The HVAC Technician classification performs the full range of skilled journey-level heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration work.  In addition, the Senior HVAC Technician configures and maintains the District’s EMS system and troubleshoots more complex HVAC issues. The HVAC Technician Trainee performs semi-skilled and skilled work in the HVAC trade; through on the job training and supervision, assignments become more complex in nature including work requiring more advanced skill and knowledge, with the opportunity to advance to HVAC Technician after gaining experience at the Trainee level. The Maintenance Worker I independently or as a member of a work crew performs a variety of moderately difficult semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks of District facilities and equipment.  The Maintenance Worker II frequently assists and performs skilled maintenance, repair and construction tasks in one or more of the trades areas, under close supervision of a journey-level trades person and performs moderate to complex semi-skilled tasks independently or as a member of a work crew.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Knowledge of: Standard methods, codes, materials, practices, tools, and equipment used in the heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration trade; basic tools and procedures used in other/related trades; safety practices necessary around tools and materials and for performing work with heavy physical requirements. Senior designation must also have knowledge of programming BBMD Tables for routers, gateways and links. Must also have knowledge of protocols such as Bacnet, Ethernet, Modbus, Open, Smart Distributed System and Zigbee.

Ability to: Demonstrate proficiency in performing skilled mechanical, electrical, and electronic installation, inspection, calibration, diagnoses, repair and maintenance of heating, ventilating, airconditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems; understand the principles of the heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration trade at a level sufficient to identify problems and perform tasks safely and completely; use required hand and power tools and equipment; operate trucks; read and work from sketches, plans, drawings, specifications and blueprints; work cooperatively with co-workers, site and District staff, students and others; communicate clearly and effectively; understand and follow oral and written directions; maintain records; schedule and perform work to meet established time lines; work independently with little direction; learn and perform duties of other trades if assigned; serve as assistant or lead worker on larger projects. Senior designation must also have the ability to build and commission a network including addressing and setup of controllers.

Essential Physical Activities and Work Environment: Sufficient stamina to stand, walk, sit, climb, kneel, crawl, reach, twist, crouch, squat, balance and bend on a daily basis for eight to ten hours a day; strength to regularly transport objects weighing up to 75 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds (e.g. pumps, compressors, etc.); mobility to climb and descend ladders; subject to working in high, precarious places; sufficient finger dexterity to grasp, push, and pull hand and power tools and heavy equipment and objects; sufficient stamina to perform heavy manual labor on a daily basis; sufficient dexterity to work in confined areas; sufficient hearing and speaking to give and receive instructions; and vision sufficient to read fine print.

Work is subject to exposure to electric shock, poor ventilation, chemicals, fumes, solvents, gases, dust, dirt, odors, noise and vibrations. Work is conducted occasionally in adverse weather conditions, and is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments. Work is subject to traveling to District sites. This job generally requires 10% sitting, 45% walking, and 45% standing.

Typical Background: Any combination of training and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and abilities to perform the typical duties.

A Trainee would have a high school diploma or recognized equivalent, two years of skilled maintenance experience, and six months of experience working under the direct oversight of a journey-level HVAC Technician and/or maintenance supervisor, preferably including courses in the HVAC trade.

An HVAC Technician would have a high school diploma or recognized equivalent and one of the following that leads to skilled or journey-level equivalency: Four years of progressively responsible work experience in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration trade, or trade schooling and experience, or a formal apprenticeship.

An alternative career pathway for promotional candidates may include a combination equivalent to four years of progressively responsible maintenance experience with two years at the HVAC Technician Trainee level, preferably along with completion of approved courses in the HVAC trade. Promotional candidates must also apply for, and pass, the District’s HVAC Technician examination, per Personnel Commission Rules, once the required experience level has been satisfactorily achieved.

A Senior HVAC Technician would have four years of journey-level HVAC experience, which includes the configuring and managing of a computerized Energy Management Control System and its software.

Alternative career pathway to Senior HVAC Technician for promotional candidates may include a minimum of two years of District journey level HVAC experience. Transcripts or a certificate showing the completion of manufacturer training courses with the District’s current EMS is preferred.

Licenses and/or Certificates: Refrigerant Recovery Certification, universal type. Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license. Must meet District vehicle and liability insurance requirements. May be required to obtain job-related certificates after appointment.

Qualifications: In order to be considered qualified for a vacancy in this classification, a candidate must possess the required background and successfully demonstrate such background, knowledge, skills and abilities through an examination process.
