Dear Parent/Guardian:
This spring, all California School Districts will be participating in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, or CAASPP assessments. The CAASPP state academic testing program includes Smarter Balanced computer adaptive tests in English–language arts and mathematics in Grades 3 through 8. In addition, students in Grades 5 and 8 will take the California Science Test (CAST). Escondido Union School District’s testing window is April 23 through May 23.
There are several benefits of the Smarter Balanced assessment that aim at improving teaching and learning. These online assessments go beyond single answer multiple-choice questions to include a variety of question types requiring students to use higher level thinking skills and construct responses. In addition, performance tasks will allow students to demonstrate research, writing, and analytical skills.
Following Spring 2025 testing, students will receive individual score reports. Student score reports will be sent home to parents and will include an overall score, a description of the student’s achievement level for English–language arts and mathematics, and other information. Students in 5th and 8th grade will also receive scores for the science test. The CAASPP system is intended to provide information that can be used to monitor student progress so all students leave high school ready for college and careers.
Pursuant to California Education Code 60615, parents may annually submit to the school a written request to excuse their child from any or all of CAASPP.
